Both RR 1 and RR 2 head out on the same route down Mitchells Pass and into the Katberg district. RR1 climbs the old Katberg Pass whilst the RR2 riders take the longer, more scenic route via Post Retief. They join up with the RR1 route at the top of Katberg Pass and together they descend down the famous Devil’s Bellow Pass finally arriving in Cathcart where a coffee break and refuel are some options to consider. It’s then a short stretch along the tar road till we turn off to the Historical village of Thomas River … an Old railway station with some cool museum stuff to catch your eye. RR1 then split out and head up through the private farms of Peter Cotterel and enter the Rand Forestry with an awesome jeep track into Keiskamma Hoek. RR2 go via Stutterheim where they rejoin the RR1 route and do a great forest ride all the way back to Hogsback where cold beers await.
A lot of Day 1’s route in reverse but the highlights are the farms of Butch James where the RR1 riders tackle the Henderson loops. RR2 has the opportunity to ride to the base of the 1st climb and create their own spectator points. We then traverse 6 beautiful farms with the terrain varying from single to jeep track and some really cool climbs en route. Lochart Whylie’s farm called Grasslands is where we settle in for lunch. On the way home we head up to the place where Hogsback got its name … a wonderful forestry switchback as we hug the Amatola mountain range followed by a cool descent to the finish of an epic 2 day adventure and a guaranteed party in the Chill Zone.
